Roland GP-100

The Roland GP100 is a guitar rack effects unit. It includes a wide range of flexible and high quality guitar effects, as well as preamp, speaker and microphone positioning emulations.

It uses Roland's COSM technology from their VG-8 system, and was available many years before the current range of amp-emulation products. It still compares favourably in the quality and flexibility departments.

Patches for the GP100

My sonic musical tastes lean towards clean, full sounds with bags of character.   However strong the overdrive, I still like to hear the timbre of the guitar come though!   Very few of these patches are "special effects", they are mainly intended for practical gigging sounds.

If your looking for the killer metal patch, you'll probably be disappointed here.   On the other hand, if you're looking for creamy, soulful and expressive blues & rock tones, I hope you find something you like!

I also have patches from Roberto Sanna (another GP-100 owner) who has kindly sent copies of his favourite patches.   Check them out!

Controllers & Global Settings
Just before we get to my patches, I should explain how I use my MIDI controllers with the GP100.
  • I have a foot pedal set to MIDI Controller 7 to control the volume of every patch
  • I have another foot pedal set to MIDI Controller 80 for patch variations
  • And lastly, a foot switch set to MIDI Controller 81 for patch variations or toggles

To get the same sounds I use, you may also want to try my Global settings:

  • Low EQ, High EQ, Threshold Level all 0dB
  • Reverb level 100%
  • OUTPUT Channel: OUTPUT A&B
  • SP Simulator: Patch
  • Amps Used: Tube
  • Speakers Used: Stack
  • SP Color: Straight
  • Preamp/Processor: Coupled
I generally cut the Global High EQ and Reverb settings to suit rooms with hard surfaces, which always sound brighter and more lively than your typical pub lounge.   I have set the delay levels for live work also, and you may want to reduce these a little if you're getting effects from your mixing desk, or for recording/home use.

Up until recently I had been using a separate set of patches for my start guitar (single coil pickups) and my dual-humbucker guitar.   This is not all that convenient - it meant using different sets of patches from my MIDI footswitch .   I've now found that switching the 'SP Color' setting to 'Straight' adds bottom end, which is ideal for compensating for the difference between the single coil and humbucking guitars.   So now I can get similar tone balance from the two guitars, but of course still get the individual character from each guitar.

The Patches
You will need to set your GP100 to MIDI channel 1 to load these patches.   Click here for a ZIP file (2K) of all patches.

If you want to view GP100 patch settings on your PC, I have written a Windows application called GP100set which allows you to   view, print and save GP100 settings from SysEx files.   You can also use this application to extract individual patches and optionally save them on a different MIDI channel, with a different patch name and number.

NEWSFLASH #1! - GP100set update - dateline 11 Dec 99

If you use GP100set, make sure you get the latest update to version 1.1a.   It's free!

NEWSFLASH #2! - Santana Smooth - dateline 12 Dec 99

I recently learnt the Santana song 'Smooth' and my own creamy overdrive patch is nothing like the Santana sound, so I've worked on a patch just for that sound.   I have not yet tried it with the band, so I expect I'll want to come back and tweak it later; anyway you can download it here.

It uses the dual alogorithm, and loads into patch number 100.   I've used a Boogie lead sound for the main, creamy overdrive with a dash of delay and reverb.   The second channel mixes in some Soldano preamp for that distinctive sizzle, with a hint of chorus (hardly enough to know it's on), which I think I can hear in certain places on the track.

And although it's not on the track, no Santana patch is complete without a wah pedal, so I've catered for that also.   Switching on the wah also lowers the Soldano sound for a more convincing wah effect.   Enjoy!

Last patch update: 7 Feb 98 (I don't actually use many of these patches anymore, but they should serve as good starting points for your own sounds.   Mostly, these have far too much delay and reverb level; otherwise they should be OK)

Patch 81:  Fender Twin
Controller #80: Delay & Reverb Level
Controller #81: Chorus - on/off
Plain, clear, full sound.   Suitable for ballads, jazz & clean chord work.

Patch 82:  Ker Chunk
Controller #80: Delay Level
Controller #81: Chorus - on/off
Cut mids, edgy sound, fairly clean.   For chunky rhythm work & bitey solo work.

Patch 83:  A Little Boogie
Controller #80: Chorus Level
Controller #81: Feedbacker
Middley, mild overdrive.   Optimised for rock power chords.

Patch 84:  Velvet Drive
Controller #80: Reverb Level
Controller #81: Phaser - on/off
Creamy Marshall solo sound.   Overdriven valve sound with cut highs.

Patch 85:  Chunky Bright
Controller #80: Middle Boost
Controller #81: Flanger - on/off
Thin and bright for sharp chord work (funk, country rock, etc).   Also useful for textural playing without dominating the mix.

Patch 86:  Marshall Law
Controller #80: Presence
Controller #81: Boost & Chorus - on/off
Sizzling overdrive of the solo Marshall sound.   The switch and pedal controllers give extra variety.

Patch 87:  Brown Twin
Controller #80: Slapback Delay Level
Controller #81: Phaser - on/off
Brown solo sound.   Very smooth with squashy dynamics to emulate a valve amp sweet spot.

Patch 88:  Marsher Fendall
Controller #80: Attack (sets Fender mix level)
Controller #81: Fizz - on/off (sets a "buzzier" distortion sound)
Overdriven Marshall mixed with a fairly clean Fender.   Good for chord and solo work.   Retains the Fender clarity in complex chords, with the sustain of the overdriven Marshall.   Picked notes start clean, and decay into a sizzling overdrive (the opposite of a normal stomp box effect!)

Patch 89:  Chorus Squash
Controller #80: "Shiver" Tremolo Depth
Controller #81: Chorus - off/on
Spacey compressed chorus sound, similar to Andy Summers Police sounds.

Patch 90:  Phaser
Controller #80: Phaser Speed
Controller #81: High Resonance - on/off
Clean phaser sound.   Good for muted playing, arpeggios, etc.

Patch 91:  Warm Blues
Controller #80: Overdrive Level + extra reverb
Controller #81: Speaker Cabinet select
A personal favourite.   Versatile earthy blues sound which retains the guitar timbre (character).   Slightly overdriven, works for chords and solos.   Optimised for Strat neck pickup.

Patch 92:  Mega Flange
Controller #80: Resonance
Controller #81: Speaker Cabinet select
Dirty and swirling 70’s "jet landing" special effect.

Patch 93:  Clean Wah
Controller #80: Wah Pedal
Controller #81: Chorus on/off
Clean wah pedal.

Patch 94:  Rock Wah
Controller #80: Wah off/on
Controller #81: Speaker Cabinet
Overdriven wah pedal.

Patch 95:  3rd Harmony
Controller #80: Delay Level
Controller #81: Harmony (off/on)
Controller #82:   Selects the key (0=C to 11=B) - preferably set the key to the chord you're playing over (easy if you're using a sequencer!)
Overdriven chord harmony.   Uses the "USER" harmony scale, which I have set to chord harmonies, instead of the PRESET scale which uses straight 3rds.   The note intervals (USER scale for +3rd) are:

Tonicb2nd2ndb3rd3rd4thb5th5thb6th6thb7th7th
+4+3+3+3+3+4+5+5+4+3+4+3

Patch 96:  Echo Tap
Controller #80: Delay Level
Controller #81: Tap Tempo
Overdriven rock repeat delay sound.   Set the echo tempo (4 presses on the switch controller) to the song tempo.

Patch 97:  Bright Reverb
Controller #80: Tremolo Level
Controller #81: Reverb level - normal/high
Thin, clean reverb sound, with tremolo (mistakenly labelled "Vibrato" on Fender amps).   Surf's Up!

Patch 98:  Matchless Crunch
Controller #80: Delay Level
Controller #81: Preamp Drive
Only just started to experiment with this one.
