Sustainable Schools...

Australia Sustainable Schools Initiative -AuSSI-

Sustainable sites have an ecologically centred ethos based on learning that is equitable, experiential, empowering and ultimately transformative.

Their learning and management processes, practices, monitoring and reporting reflect the reconciliation of social justice, ecological integrity and the well being of all living systems on the planet (1). Sustainable sites practice futures-oriented education (2), modelling an ecologically and socially just world without compromising future generations.

They have the knowledge, skills, values and behaviours necessary to pursue sustainable practices and achieve sustainable outcomes in a context of participatory and coordinated local management, curriculum engagement and community decision-making.

Within South Australian schools and sites, AuSSI- SA is a joint initiative of the South Australian Department of Education and Children’s Services and the Department for Environment and Heritage with the Australian Government Department of the Environment and Heritage as a major sponsor.

AuSSI-SA is working with trailing schools and sites in conjunction with AAEE, Natural Resource Management  boards (NRM) to support their communities to develop and document the knowledge, skills, values and behaviours necessary to pursue sustainable practices and achieve sustainable outcomes in a context of participatory and coordinated local management, curriculum engagement and community decision-making.
