I have a valid question about Naam.
Does Naam mean the same "thing" in all the verses ?(not a scholarly approach but a true seeker's approach).
Honest Request from me. How can I identify Naam in my
daily living ?

I hope I am not going to be preached that I need a living
master to show me the way.

Veer Santokh
Ji,
Thanks for the question about Naam and how to
identify with it in daily life. Thanks also for the links you sent. They
require to be read thoroughly and mulled over for a time ...
In my opinion, Naam is like a Collective
Noun. It encompasses many Names of God, yet ultimately they all
point to the same essence (or MOOL ) of The Naam. So although it may sound and/or mean different in
separate verses, all those sounds culminate in the One Gurmantar,
they all strike the same Naad Dhun as Raam, Jagdees, Hari, Khuda, Allah, WAHEGURU, Nirangkaar,
Niranjan, and so on. In Akaal
Ustat, Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj says >>CLICK HERE<<
says that the Names of God are many.
That is, having said that Naam is the same
"thing", in my opinion, in different verses, we need to understand what is the Naam-State,
before trying to answer as to how to identify it in daily life.
Naam, to me, is a state of awe and rapture,
that focusses our innate Attention (Dhian) on the grandeur of of
our Cosmos, our Universe so much so that our Entire BEING
gets 'lost' in the majesty and splendour of that Intrinsic
Intelligence that is behind all of, manifest and unmanifest,
Creation. By re-iterating any one of God's Names, or The Naam, we can be in that state beforehand ... and be
fixated on our Prime GurMantar ... Waheguru
How do we identify with The Naam, therefore ? Well, have a look at SGGS Panna
972- Bani of Bhagat
NaamDeo or click on thumbnails below
:
[SGGS Panna 972]
Just as a boy flies his kite, talks to his friends, but keeps his attention
on the kite string, and just as a maiden carries a pitcher of water on her
head, walks and talks with her friends, but keeps her attention on the
pitcher so that it does not fall off her head, and just as a goldsmith keeps
his attention focussed on his work, whilst
still talking to his customers, so also we need to keep our Being (Soul)
focussed in its attention on any Name of God (or
The Naam), whilst we still carry out our daily
chores with our feet and hands ...
Santokh Ji,
please have a read of the above sabad. It explains
very simply how to identify with Naam in our
daily living.
I hope this helps :)

I need further clarification on this. Because mind needs mental pictures to put its attention on, like the cow's attention is on the calf - it has it's goal very clear in mind. But how does one have a clear picture on Shabad Waheguru in one's mind? Your first half has helped me but made me even more curious. But this is good satsang.

What you say is completely true, Santokh
Ji, and tried as hard as I could, it remained an
enigma for me to think out, feel out, or intuit out, a method whereby we could
fix our attention of the very abstract, Waheguru ! As
you say ours is truly a satsang approach. We can only
offer our thoughts and ideas, feelings and beliefs, to share with all of us and
we hope somewhere, somehow we will come up with what a true-seeker needs ?
How do we transpose the Gurbani of Bhagat Naam Deo
to elucidate the Naam is something I will now ponder
over and hope to get back to you in a couple of days. Meantime could you please
also try doing the same? Two heads are better than one, they say
!
PS I don't think ToniJi will keep tabs on you (lol) but I must say she is quite excited to have you on our

Veerji Here is my understanding from the study of SGGSji.
The above shabad of Bhagat Naam Deo refers to the state of
mind which we are accustomed to in our normal daily life wherein the
subconscious mind and the senses are aware about of one thing while doing
something else.
From ancient times saints and scholars have explained that our ANTEHKARAN has four parts :
MAN : Its activity is thought processes.
BUDHI : Its activity is to decide and choose.
CHIT : Its activity is to memory.
AHANKAR : It is the awareness of self and thats why relationship.
Bhagat Naam Deo ji is explaining an important
method in spirtual practice.
This is how we can do our daily chores and do simran
at the same time.
What we do is Naam simran.
Naam means our origin. All is oneness
, a manifestation of Nirankar.Although every
thing in this world appears separate but has same origin. This facet has been refered in gurbani as Naam.
Name that refer to the origin when repeated again and
again is Jap.
Gurbani shabads also point
towards GOD and are thus JAP when repeated.
Simran is RE-MEMBRANCE of our origin.
Purpose of JAP and SIMRAN is to lift the viels that
create the illusion of separateness.
The world has originated by the SHABAD .And this divine origin aspect of the
world is Naam.
Naam simran is to focus on
our origin so as to unviel the origin.

Through the Shabad, is the Naam
(and); through the Shabad, we are united again.
- SGGS page 644
Shabad is flowing in everyone and every thing and the
way taught by Guru Nanak Devji is Surt-
Shabad Abhyas.
When we start to read gurbani with these ideas in
mind the meanings get to reveal themselves.

Really on impulse I visited the site to see if anything had happened since last
night. This is one of those mushrooming discussions that mean so much. My
reaction here is half-baked -- just based instant images that flashed around as
i read through the conversation quickly.
The Shabad - Just as a boy flies his kite, talks
to his friends, but keeps his attention on the kite string, and just as a
maiden carries a pitcher of water on her head, walks and talks with her
friends, but keeps her attention on the pitcher so that it does not fall off
her head, and just as a goldsmith keeps his attention focussed
on his work, whilst still talking to his customers, so also we need to keep our
Being (Soul) focussed in its attention on any Name of
God (or The Naam), whilst we still carry out our
daily chores with our feet and hands ...
It is describing the feeling and sound of the process - a kind of in-tunement - perceiving and adjusting the pitch and timbre of
our connection inwardly and outwardly - according to a sense of "just
rightness" - That was more my intuitive reaction rather than an image.
Then the image of the cow attending to the calf - Santokh describing how images like these help. And
the image that came to me was a counter-image - the calf seeking the gaze of
its mother.
Putting these two ideas together, the discussion does instant magic. More to assimilate. This is just half-baked. I need to go
back and think about everything that has been said by all of you.

You had commented on mind needing mental pictures to
focus on.
But this is true with regard to conscious awareness focused on this world and
is only a part of minds job/function.
The purpose of simran is to bo beyond the mind.Consciousness
is separate from the general acceptance of what mind is.
Feeling is the key.
We have to give up minds pictures. It is one of the viel.
