What is Reiki

The word Reiki (pronounced Ray-key) is a Japanese word which means Universal Life Force Energy. The kanji (Japanese alphabet) definition of "Rei" means Universal, from God, or unlimited and "ki" is the life force energy which flows through all living things. It understands each of us completely, knowing the cause of all problems and difficulties and it knows what we, as individuals, must do to heal ourselves. "Ki" is the same as "chi" in Chinese, or "prana" in Sanskrit. It is the universal life force that emanates from every living thing. If the life force is low, or there is a blockage of life force within the body, then we are more prone to illness or lowered resistance.

Reiki is a natural and simple system of healing and spiritual development. In the west, Reiki is often taught solely as a healing system, but in Japan the emphasis is just as much on the pathway to enlightenment through Reiki, as it is on healing. It can also be described as unconditional love.

In the west, three and sometimes four levels of Reiki are taught. Level I is Hands On Healing, Level II is Distance Healing and Level III (Master Level) is the Teaching Level. Some Reiki teachers split the Third Level into Master Practitioner and Master Teacher.

Reiki Healing is a very simple technique. All that is required for it to work is the intention that Reiki will be given, and to place the hands on or above the person who is to receive healing. The energy does not have to be guided, as it will go where it is needed.

The difference between Reiki and other healing methods is that the ability to use Reiki is passed to the student via an attunement from the teacher. It is said that receiving this attunement is like being tuned into a radio station! The energy was always there, but in order to access it, the right frequency needs to be located. Once someone has been attuned or initiated into Reiki, the ability to use it is always with them. The more it is used, the stronger the energy seems to be, and the sooner it begins to flow when giving a treatment.

Reiki works on all levels, whether physical, emotional or spiritual. It goes to where it is needed, and can do no harm. It compliments conventional medicine, often speeding up the recovery time of surgery and other treatments.

Reiki is not a religion and can be used in conjunction with all religious beliefs as a hands-on healing practice.
