Sturt CFS Sent a Crew of 9 to Kangaroo Island to assist the operations at the Mt Taylor Fire in the Flinders Chase National Park

The crew was part of a Country Fire Service strike team from the mainland to help the local brigades fighting the fire.

83 people from Region 1 including Sturt Group personnel left the mainland at 18:00 on January 4th and were at the fire by 21:30.

Backburning was carried out on farm land near the fire, and in the Flinders Chase National Park to reduce the risk of it spreading out of the scrub. Further backburning was carried out on the Gosse-Ritchie Road.

The amount of scrub burnt by the fire was around 2500 hectares with much of the fire burning in thick scrub and rugged terrain, including inside the Flinders Chase National park.

A second team from Sturt CFS was sent on Friday 5th January including Cherry Gardens 14 and Belair CAFS appliance.

It's estimated the incident will cost about $400,000 and much of that has been spent on Kangaroo Island, giving the local economy a big boost during the already busy tourist season.

Sturt crews returned home on Friday 5th, Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th of January.

Photos below are from the fireground on January 4th and 5th.
