Freight Train Derailment - Glenalta - October 21 2002


All Rail Traffic on the train line to Melbourne and the local line to Belair was brought to a standstill on Monday morning October 21 when a freight train derailed at Glenalta.

Witnesses made dozens of emergency calls as the freight cars slammed into each other to become a giant pile of steel.

Miraculously no one was injured or no damage to any other vehicles or property occurred.

Blackwood and Belair were responded to the scene to investigate a gas leak however no leak was discovered.

It was more than 24 hours before the rail line was cleared and repaired and trains resumed their normal schedules.
