We are an Australian and
Swiss family. A few years ago we purchased a small Chateau
in the centre of the town of St Germain du Plain in Burgundy
and began the task of restoration.
To begin with, one of the things which attracted us was the
location - a property of four hectares right in the centre
of a town. We are across the road from the town hall and all
the facilities you might need are to be found literally
within walking distance: two supermarkets, a bakery, the
post office, the bank, even a pharmacy and a doctor's
clinic. Yet, inside the park with its century old trees, all
is peace and tranquility.
Meet the local people and discover the traditional
hospitality of Burgundy. Here, people from abroad are
welcomed in the friendliest way.
Of course, Burgundy is renowned for its wines. With good
wines goes a tradition of good foods. The gastronomy of
Burgundy is also justifiably renowned.
There are many woods and lakes in the surrounding area and
this is a region known for fishing and hunting - duck,
pheasant and deer. Game is on the menu in Autumn.
We have also discovered there is more to the region. It has
many historical monuments, which we continue to explore.
The famous canals of Burgundy wind through the country-side
and not far from the Chateau you can hire a houseboat for a
day, or longer.
The River Saone is just five minutes away, flowing towards
Lyon where it joins the Rhone.
At the end of summer, many Europeans come to the region for
the antique and bric-a-brac fairs. In Chalon-sur-Saone, the
birthplace of photography, Kodak and Philips have
established plants and you can visit the photographic
museum.
This is a region to discover.
