A Smile costs nothing, but gives much

It enriches those who receive, without making poorer those who give

It takes but a moment, but the memory of it sometimes lasts forever

None is so rich or mighty that he can get along without it,
and none is so poor, but that he can be made rich by it

A Smile creates happiness in the home, fosters good will in business,
and is the countersign of friendship

It brings rest to the weary, cheer to the discouraged, sunshine to the sad,
and it is nature's best antidote for trouble.

Yet it cannot be bought, begged, borrowed, or stolen,
for it is something that is of no value to anyone, until it is given away

Some people are too tired to give you a smile;
Give them one of yours, as none needs a smile so much as he who has no more to give.

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;

If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:

If you can dream - and not make dreams your master;
If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;

If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with wornout tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;

If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: 'Hold on!'

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings - nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;

If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run -
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man my son!

Your Customer

There are organisations that talk a lot about the customer and
then completely neglect the people that deal with the customer
- the employees. Always treat your employees exactly as you
want them to treat your best customers.

You can buy a personís hand, but you cannot buy their heart.
The heart is where the enthusiasm, and loyalty is. You can
buy their back, but you canít buy their brain. Thatís where
a person's creativity, ingenuity and resourcefulness is.

Work is treating employees as volunteers just as you treat
customers as volunteers, because thatís what they are. They
volunteer the best part - their hearts and minds.

To laugh, is to risk playing the fool.
To weep, is to risk appearing sentimental.
To reach out to another, is to risk involvement.
To expose feelings, is to risk exposing our true selves.
To put your ideas, your dreams, before the crowd is to risk loss.
To love, is to risk not being loved in return.
To live, is to risk dying.
To hope, is to risk despair.
To try at all, is to risk failure.

But risks must be taken,
Because the greatest hazard in life is to risk nothing.
The person who risks nothing, does nothing, has nothing, is nothing.
They may avoid suffering and sorrow, but they simply cannot learn, change, feel, grow, love, live...
Chained by their attitudes they are slaves.

We give of ourselves when

we give gifts of the heart:

love, kindness, joy, understanding,

sympathy, tolerance, forgiveness.

We give of ourselves when

we give gifts of the mind:

ideas, dreams, purposes, ideals,

principles, plans, inventions, projects, poetry.

We give of ourselves when

we give gifts of the spirit:

prayer, vision, beauty, aspiration,

peace, faith.

We give of ourselves when

we give the gift of words:

encouragement, inspiration, guidance.

Emerson said it well:

"Rings and jewels are not gifts,

but apologies for gifts.

The only true gift is

a portion of thyself."

That woman is a success
who loves life
and lives it to the fullest;
Who has discovered and shared
the strengths and talents
that are uniquely her own;
Who puts her best into each task
and leaves each situation
better than she found it;
Who seeks and finds
that which is beautiful
in all people and things;
Whose heart is full of love
and warm with compassion;
Who has found joy in living
and peace with herself.

Today is My Day

Today my thoughts are centred on expecting only the best
and giving only the best.

Today my mind and heart are open to new opportunities
and I make the most out of every situation.

Today I will smile and act enthusiastically in everything I do.
I will make every person I meet feel very important and
I will show them that I care.

Today my confidence is high and I am willing to step out
and take a chance.
I speak freely to all those I meet.
I know I have something valuable to contribute.
I expect results today and my time is well invested.

Today I am one step closer to achieving my goals and dreams.
I always keep my eyes focussed on success
     and prosperity.

Today I will sow good seed so that I will reap my harvest of reward.

Today is my day!

The Day Before Tomorrow

The day before tomorrow
Is a very special day
And I feel that I should live it
In a happy kind of way...

Tomorrow's so mysterious
That I really can't foresee
The things that might be happening
And the way that life might be

But the Day Before Tomorrow
That's quite a different thing...
Those hours are so much closer
I can guess what they might bring...

I'd rather be a sparrow
Or a lily of the field
And just wait til God's will for me
Is finally revealed...

I'll put aside the griefs and cares --
The trouble I won't borrow
And just be glad I'm living in
The Day Before Tomorrow!

Success is doing the best you can,
in as many ways as you can.
It is being just and honest and true --
not in a few things, but in everything you do.

Always look ahead and never look back,
believe you can make all your dreams come true.
Always believe in the best you can be
and have faith in the things that you do.

Forget about mistakes you've made yesterday,
the lessons you learn will prove valuable for today...
Never give up and think that you're through...
for there's always tomorrow and
a chance to begin brand new.

It is in dreaming the greatest dreams...
and seeking the highest goals...
that we build the brightest tomorrows.

There is no limit to the goals you can attain,
or the success you can achieve...
your possibilities are as endless as your dreams.
Whatever it is that you seek in life,
whatever your dreams and what you hope to achieve,
whatever you try to reach -- whatever you plan...
can all be yours -- if you only believe you can!

For Those Who Believe
All Is Possible
There are no miracles for those
who doubt their possibilities...
But for those who believe --
truly believe...
all is possible.

Whatever you may have believed;
whatever you may have done;
and whatever you may be in your life --
It's not too late to change course
and begin anew...

A fresh start, a bright future
and the wonderful peace that passes
all understanding,
are yours for the taking,
now and forever more!

I first came across the poem "What is Life"  when I was waiting in a doctors office in a Rehabilitation Hospital.  Below the poem there was the words "Author Unknown".  I copied down the poem and put it up on my web site.  Four years later, I received an email from a site visitor saying that the poem was written by his mother.  I had no reason to disbelieve his comment and do believe that his mother wrote down the poem in front of her children.  So I put her name on my site as the author of the poem.

Within one week of the change I received another email from another site visitor saying that it is well known that the poem was actually written by Mother Theresa.   I am sure that Mother Theresa would never want to be connected with an argument over who wrote a poem.  She would simply want to know that the meaning of the poem, in whatever form, was being read and enjoyed by peoples from all religions and countries.

So I give to you both versions (and I assume there are many others out there).  Let us not argue over who wrote the poem.  Let us simply enjoy the words and meaning behind them.

Life is an opportunity, .... benefit from it.
Life is beauty, .... admire it.
Life is bliss, .... taste it.
Life is a dream, .... realize it.
Life is a challenge, .... meet it.
Life is a duty, .... complete it.
Life is a game, .... play it.
Life is a promise, .... fulfill it
Life is sorrow, .... overcome it.
Life is a song, .... sing it.
Life is a struggle, .... accept it.
Life is a tragedy.... confront it.
Life is an adventure, .... dare it.
Life is luck, .... make it.
Life is too precious, .... do not destroy it.
Life is life, .... fight for it.

Author:  Mother Theresa

What Is Life?

Life is a gift
Life is an adventure
Life is a mystery
Life is a game
Life is a struggle
Life is beauty
Life is a puzzle
Life is an opportunity
Life is sorrowful
Life is a song
Life is a goal
Life is a mission

.....   Accept It
.....   Dare It
.....   Unfold It
.....   Play It
.....   Face It
.....   Praise It
.....   Solve It
.....   Take It
.....   Experience It
.....   Sing It
.....   Achieve It
.....   Fulfil It

Julia Napier

Hi a friend sent this (web page) to me, and I asked her where she got it, and she said that she found it on the Internet.  I asked her for the address and she gave me this.  My moms name is Julia Napier, and she wrote the poem What Is Life, you know, the one that goes, Life is a gift, accept it. Just thought that you would like to know that. She wrote it a long time ago, but I know this because me and my brother were sitting next to her when she scribbled it down on paper.  Wonder how it got on the Internet.  I told her it was there, she was happy that people liked it, but she isn't the one that put it there.  I think a long time ago, she gave it to a friend, and that is the last she did with it, except put it in her book. Now, she isn't a "Author Unknown".

When things go wrong as they sometimes will
When the road you're trudging seems all up hill
When the funds are low and the debts are high
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh
When care is pressing you down a bit
Rest, if you must, but don't you quit.

Life is queer, with its twists and turns
As everyone of us sometimes learns
And many a failure turns about
When he/she might have won had he/she stuck it out
Don't give up though the pace seems slow
You may succeed with another blow.

Success is failure turned inside out
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt
And you never can tell how close you are
It may be near when it seems so far
So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit
It's when things seem worst that you must not quit.

I have been advised that the author is:
Larry S Chengges
Sam Candelaria
Clinton Howell
Edgar Gest
Frank Collins
Gerard Haughey

I leave it up to you, the readers to decide who wrote this lovely poem. Don't let the squabling (see below) over who wrote the poem, spoil your enjoyment of the beautiful words and meaning within the poem.

Originally I listed this beautiful poem as "Author Unknown"; then I received an email from a site visitor who said the poem was written by Larry S Chengges. I changed my web site to reflect this.

Soon after I received an email from another visitor who said:
Regarding the poem "Don't Quit", someone apparently stated that some individual was believed to be the author of the poem. That is not correct , I wrote the poem and I have proof available in the form of the poem previously being published .
Thanks Sam Candelaria

I performed a search and came across a web site saying it was written by Clinton Howell contriuted by AnKur Bhatia.

Another site says Edgar Guest wrote the poem.

I then received the following email:
Greetings from Ireland.

Regarding the poem Life/Dont Quit it is an exact copy of the Life poem written by my late Father Frank Collins while in Hospital in Birmingham In 1952. National Newspapers printed the history of my Father when the poem was put on display by the Irish Heritage Trust in Bunratty Castle and Folk park Co Clare Ireland 1997.

The National and Local Newspaper printed the history of my late father and the writing of the poem Life. I also have a copy of Britannia where an apology was printed to my late Brother because they printed it without his permission. I have been paid copyright fees by PRS on behalf of Johnny Senna Hayes./ Caron Wheeler who admitted prior to Court action that the words of the song sung by Caron Wheeler was a copy of my late fathers poem . have a copy of the MCP membership in my name . Therefore author unknown is incorrect Author is Frank Collins and is registered with the Copyright Association of GB CAE Number 251613298 Membership No A4928 10 August 1994 MCPS Members Number 178278721 12/8/93

I now request you to forward to me your account of number of poems sold and copyright fees due to me otherwise I will be left with no option but to sue for breach of copyright and report your company to the relevant copyright protection agencies.

I wrote back the following to Thomas J Collins:
The poem 'Don't Quit' is listed on my web site free to the world without charge.

Who ever wrote this inspirational poem, and there is much discussion about this on the web, was I believe, a kind hearted person who wanted to inspire the world and individuals. I know from the many emails I have received about this poem, that it has helped many get through some very difficult health and life crisis (including myself).

I have recently received many claims of ownership to this poem. I will be changing my web site soon to refer to all the known claimants of this poem - one from over one hundred years ago. I will also add your fathers name to the list.

In the mean time, it seams a pitty that you would deny such an inspirational poem to the world. If written by your father you certainly do not take after him with regards to kind heartedness.

I await your suit.

Thomas then wrote back to me with the following:
Greetings from Ireland.

I have no problem with people giving out the poem free and I have given thousands of copies to various charities.
But when you come across the poem on sale in your local mall for 6 Euro and the total going to a multi national
printing company then I start to follow up those distributing the poem. To date any monies received by me have been given to charity and always will.

Wishing you well and may God keep you safely in the palm of his hand.

Thomas J Collins

I thought that might have been the end of all this confusion over who wrote the poem, but alas it was not. Only one week later I received the following email:

Thank you for hosting my poem 'Don't Quit' on your website.

If you've visited my website I just want to say thank you. If not, please do visit my website.

I want to say that I am the writer of the poem "Don't Quit', for one reason and one reason only. And that is simply because I wrote it. Don't get me wrong, I want people to know I wrote it also for the credit, and the celebration too. But this whole thing is not going to be easy for me, to say the least. I need people to help me. I need people to email me and assist me in some work that needs to be done to further advance my statements of truth. I believe if help arrives at my doorstep (figuratively and/or literally) together pertinent people, whose names I've mentioned on the website, can be perhaps located, talked to etc. I know that in talking with people you just never know what comes out of it. I believe that my 'original poem' is in the hands of someone. If it is, the truth will be spoken of in terms of the whereabouts of the poem's place of possession. If this is accomplished, the rest of this mystery will fall into place. In the meantime, support is very welcome. After all You'd be helping the writer of a very special piece of writing.

For years I have been watching and tracking the progress of 'Don't Quit' and in my heart and face I've watched it grow with a nice full smile on my face. You don't just get a proud smile from fantasizing, no! My heart, Soul, and Mind are in synch and when you do something, no matter what it is. Doesn't Matter!! When you do something original, creative, and unique, you NEVER forget! Especially when it's so loved by the world. This is a miracle of sorts for me because, while I've done many creative things in my life, nothing has ever reached this level of love and universality. For this reason, I have finally done something about putting Truth out here, my face, my entire story and basically my integrity and character, not to mention my reputation. It is not easy to say that you are the creator of something that is famous, but if people want the Truth, and they do, because I've seen many inquiries into who wrote 'Don't Quit' through the years. So, here it is and I do realize that my "coming out" with my telling of my very proud 'Don't Quit' poem will at first appear similar to all the rest of the "I wrote Don't Quit's", but I assure you that the Truth is Truth and anything else is False. Truth also has a way of presenting itself in a way so unique that only Truth can put forth. My story is not creative, or interesting. It is what happened. It is the Truth. And, if you've gone to my website and read my story you are no longer confused as to who wrote 'Don't Quit'. Now it's just a matter of acceptance. That's it.

Thank you very much,

Gerard Haughey

This follow-up email was also sent to me by Gerard Haughey:

This poem has created some confusion and then of course there are people who sadly enough, will say something that is false? I have been telling my friends and family about 'Don't Quit' since the beginning, and this is some 10 years now. Recently I contacted a man by the name Jim who was asking for the author of 'Don't Quit' to come forward. I emailed Jim, and provided Jim with my phone number. Jim called me and we talked. I was very excited that I was actually talking to a person who was interested enough to know who wrote the poem, as apposed to people who simple use the poem to sell a product. Jim said to me "why don't you make a website about the poem, why you wrote it, where you wrote and approxiamately when"?

With this Karen, I realized I had to do this! So I did. The website cost me alot of time and some money too. But knowing it is out there now with my face and name to it. I welcome ANY challenge to the truth. Because you see I know that anyone else who comes forward with some jibberish will not be able to back their story. for example what are the stories behind the other people who claim this poem? It's simply not enough to say "I wrote a poem" and then just walk away. I realized this in talking with Jim... And any truth of doing something comes with a story.. a place you did it, why you did it.. and what motivated you to do it. I have provided these details simply for one reason and one reason only... Because It Is The Truth!

Karen as I said I accept any challenge to my words, my face, my Truth!

God Bless You

Gerard Haughey

So I leave it up to the readers to decide who wrote the poem.
