I'm another British person who's migrated to Australia (an accountant too by trade) - arrived here just over a year ago. Sydney was my choice, for career reasons mainly - but I think you were right (with a family) to look elsewhere - being single in Sydney is fine, but I wouldn't want to try to bring up a family here.

I visited Adelaide for a few days in 1998 when I was checking out possible places to live in Australia. Very nice place, possibly a little laid back for me, at the time Perth was my number one choice, it changed to Sydney almost at the last minute, mainly for career as I said. But I'm pretty sure I'll go to live elsewhere in Australia eventually, even Newcastle would offer a more spacious lifestyle.
