Links to (vaguely) related sites
- a site full of information about the RAN today and yesteryear. Contains a very useful searchable ship-history data base, slightly marred by omissions and numerous irritating typos.
THE GUN PLOT - attractive and very affectionate commemorative site with a listing of ships (nothing on there that isn't here!), anecdotes, reminiscences and a gallery of ship pics.
BOB YORK'S ROYAL AUSTRALIAN NAVY NET - contains a detailed discussion of Australian cruisers in action during World War II, and links to numerous sites of more up-to-date interest.
HMAS Castlemaine - the only Bathurst-class minesweeper still afloat - has been restored and lies alongside the wharf in Melbourne. This site tells all about her, and includes some close-up images.
AUSTRALIAN WAR MEMORIAL OFFICIAL WEB SITE - excellent commemorative site with a searchable reference and photograph data base.
VICTORIA CROSS REFERENCE - another fine commemorative site, with useful information for medal collectors as well!
NIHON KAIGUN - IMPERIAL JAPANESE NAVY - the enemy, and a very detailed and informative site, too!
THE FORGOTTEN FLEET - a comprehensive US perspective of behind-the-scenes nautical operations in the South West Pacific, with considerable detail on "Army ships" - much like Australia's "China Fleet". Some good personal accounts in his links "Diary of Walter Marshall" and "SWPA Stories". The whole site is worth a browse.
"LEYTE GULF" (History Net Article)
"BATTLE OF GUADALCANAL" (History Net Article)
U-BOAT.NET - Gudmundur Helgason's extensive site covering the war in the Atlantic, with emphasis on the German side.
ODIN'S CASTLE - THE BASTION - MARITIME HISTORY - a huge page-full of links to pirates, shipwrecks, whalers, and most things nautical. Good value.
AUSTRALIAN AVIATION ARCHIVE - a big, very comprehensive and fully cross-indexed site for the aviation enthusiast. Made up by a mate of mine who was kind enough to put a link to my site on his; so if a link to an aviation site looks peculiar on a Naval site, now you know why!
SIR HUBERT WILKINS - my own tribute to a South Australian explorer, scientist, and pioneer who deserves to be better known than he is. Nothing at all to do with nautical stuff, but it's another site by me and if I can't plug my own site, who can?
THE HISTORY GUY - A US History teacher's site aimed at US students. Under continuous development, it is heavily cross-indexed and an impressive resource for the student of history.
