Other Events
If there is sufficient interest in FoGStV's role in forming a network among groups around the Gulf, additional meetings will be held in other locations. We have previously held meetings at Middle Beach, Port Vincent (twice), Normanville, Maslin Beach, Semaphore, West Beach and Henley Beach. We are also considering holding one on Kangaroo Island. We welcome participation, ideas, suggestions, etc. And if you would like to become involved, or to be on our mailing list so that you can be informed of events, etc., please contact us. 2009 Friends of Parks Forum
FoGStV is a member group of Friends of Parks Inc., the umbrella group for 140+ volunteer community groups, many of which are involved in on-ground works in South Australia's Conservation Parks. Every year, FoPInc holds a Friends Forum - these have generally been held in regional areas, and organised by a local committee from the groups in that region. The 2008 Forum, held at Wilpena Pound and attended by 250 delegates, was highly enjoyable and a great success. The 2009 Friends Forum, the first in many years to be held in Adelaide, took place from 30 October - 1 November at the Sunnybrae Heritage Farm, Regency Park, and was attended by around 150 participants. It was organised by a committee from those FoPInc groups which are not involved with specific Parks and included, for the first time, FoGStV. The Forum was officially opened by FoGStV founding president, Pat Harbison whose talk on the impact of Adelaide's stormwater and wastewater impacts on the Gulf, and the need for greater water conservation and capture of stormwater was very well received. This message was reinforced by a presentation on the Sunday morning by Bruce Naumann of the City of Salisbury, about that Council's innovative system of stormwater harvesting, aquifer storage and recovery, and the continuing program to extend reticulation of this water to more users. Unfortunately there was no display available from the Department of Environment & Heritage on the ongoing roll-out of the new system of Marine Parks. However, FoGStV were able to mount a good display to showcase our activities and interests, with the generous loan of a large selection of the Marine Life Society of SA's superb collection of underwater photographs, many of which have featured in recent editions of the popular MLSSA calendar. As usual the Forum program included a number of excursions and the Coastal Parks tour, organised by several FoGStV members and supporters, was the most popular one with over 50 participants. The tour visited Mutton Cove, Mangrove Cove, Tennyson Dunes and Patawalonga Creek. An extensive guidebook was prepared for this tour, which we intend to extend to cover more sites and eventually have available as a downloadable PDF. Next year's Forum will be held in Woomera, with a Stony Deserts theme. More details of the program, excursions and registration forms can be downloaded here. |
