HOT AIR BALLOON OBSERVING

Another non-pilot activity is observing. An observer is allocated to each balloon during competition flying, and it is their job to record the pilot's progress and accuracy in executing tasks. Therefore, a basic knowledge of crewing is essential. Once the balloon leaves the launch site, the observer travels with the chase crew and checks the navigator's observations for accuracy. Map reading for an observer is an essential skill, but this is readily picked up with a little practice.

Skilled observers have opportunities for subsidised travel to overseas ballooning events.
