The SAGRN contract with Motorola & Telstra is due to expire in 2008, it is anticipated that as the new contract is negotiated Motorola will no longer support the current analog components of the network. It is likely that from around 2011 / 2013 the SAGRN will be upgraded to a new system . At this stage is it unclear as to what the new standard will be, there is some suggestion that it will be an APCO 25 compliant network however this is still to be decided.
It does seem likely that all users on the network will be required to upgrade to new radios. Some agencies have already purchased new digital radios to replace lost or damaged analog equipment in anticipation of the change to the APCO 25 standard.
Until the details of the new network are negotiated it is uncertain as to whether any current scanners will work, should the entire network use encryption then no one with a scanner will be able to monitor any transmissions, if it is a complete digital network then some current digital scanners will still work fine.
