VOICE ONLINE –
The Missing Link?

Michael Coghlan
Douglas Mawson Institute of Technology
THE MISSING LINK:
between emotion and intellect
between student and teacher
between student and student
between loneliness and company (group  identity)
between procrastination and motivation ( > action)
between campus based and DE students
VOICE APPLICATIONS
narration to powerpoint presentations
recorded lectures
voice recognition
MY FOCUS:
Voice interactions that include the student as a contributor in the dialogue – a participative model (not broadcast)
Such interactions are mainly synchronous, but can be asynchronous (Wimba Voice Board, voice email)
MY MISSION:
to enrich remote and campus based classes with voice based interactions, and to convince you that it’s possible and worthwhile
FORMAL V INFORMAL LEARNING
Auditory component of language learning > obvious, important role for voice tools
Voice interactions are happening in the background across all disciplines – at home, beyond the firewalls – informally
Can/should these interactions assume a more formal role in the teaching process?
Synchronous v Asynchronous
BUT IT’S NOT A CASE OF EITHER/OR …..
Synchronous + Asynchronous
(blended/hybrid model)
THE RANGE OF TOOLS
Instant Messengers (Yahoo, MSN, AOL, ICQ)
