Note for: Kadmiel Keynes, 14 MAY 1846 - 11 NOV 1927 Index
from Lydia Sydenham Custance, 'The Chimney on the Hill'
Kadmiel (1846-1927), Ellen Jane (1834-1911)
Kadmiel's cottage on a ripple of land that hides Beltana from its old rai lway station. Chimney built in 1871 to complement the little cottage whi ch was dismantled at the Sliding Rock mining camp and hauled by donkey te am to Beltana. Beltana was gazetted in 1873. The cottage had several ow ners before Kadmiel bought it. Those who lived there had a birdseye vie w of the settlement sprawled beside the Warrioota Creek near the foothill s of the Flinders Ranges.
Kadmiel and his bullock team were well known on northern roads before h e bought the cottage at Beltana.
Kadmiel was 6'4' tall with fierce integrity and shovel-sized beard.
His parents settled at Freeling in about 1853 when Kadmiel was 6. At 16 , fed up with milking cows and feeding pigs in a slushy yard, he quarrell ed with his father. This fiery old man, brandishing a mallee rail, chase d Kadmiel off the property. Kadmiel outran him and that night slept i n a field of wheat. At daybreak he was on the road heading north.
One day he staggered up to a saw-pit. It was plain to see that he had no t eaten since leaving home. He had come to White's Forest, near Mount Re markable where the owner (Mr Julian) supervised the cutting and shaping o f logs. These were carted to northern ports to lengthen and strengthen t he wharves already there.
Julian took a liking to the runaway lad and gave him a job in the eucalyp t forest. He soon was informed that Kadmiel left his job to be in camp w hen the teams came in for another load, and immediately busied himself ar ound the bullocks. Soon he was put in charge of a team and there was no t a happier man on the job.
The bullock track passed through Beautiful Valley near where Wilmington n ow stands. Here in wooded gullies and on rocky slopes the natives hid. T hey saw their tribesmen, wounded and handcuffed, dragged along bush track s knowing they would be thrown into the Melrose jail, and hate towards th e white man was at its hottest. '.....Getting through the valley was th e same as running the gauntlet. It was suicide to travel alaone. We alw ays kept a shotgun handy. I never did like that track......' Kadmiel sai d. 'If the bullocks smelled the blacks they got out uv there faster tha n I could keep up with them.' he added.
Kadmiel worked at Moonie Ponds, Cordillo Downs and Cadelga.
Lydia was living at Woolshed Flat with parents when Kadmiel visited in 19 21; at that time he said he had recently taken a spell in Dubbo, NSW an d that he had a brother there (William Keros or Joseph?).
Kadmiel had a magnifying glass given to him by a boss at Cordillo Downs . After the visit Kadmiel returned to NW NSW.
Died at home of Ellen Angelina Custance (nee Keynes), his eldest daughte r at Wilmington.
Melrose, Blinman, Beltana
During the last year or so of his life, Kadmiel lived with his daughter E llen Custance (nee Keynes). He often sat on the front verandah quietly si nging the chorus of the same song, over and over again. "Wrap me up in m y stockwhip and blankets, And bury me deep down below, Where the crows an d wolves can't molest me, In the land where the collabahs grow." Source T helma Richards (nee Custance 1910-) grand-daughter of Kadmiel.
built a little house of pug and pine
went with eldest daughter (Margaret Rogers (nee Julian) of Ellen Jane aft er the latter's death to Beltana to pack up what was to be disposed of; A nna Rennie (nee Rogers) accompanied Kadmiel and her mother.
In a letter written by Ellen Jane Keynes (nee Perrior) to Ellen Angelin a Julia Custance (nee Keynes) she wrote "The rent is 6/- a week, I don' t know what your father will say."; she was probably referring to the ren tal of premises at Quorn.
from Lydia Hayes: "Kadmiel hung on to his money. While staying with us a t Woolshed Flat (near Quorn), he went to the Quorn Show with my brother J im (James Sydenham Custance). At the gate he was asked for 2/6; "No", h e replied, "I never yet paid that to go in a gate and I won't now". Jim w anted to pay it, but went on when Kad said "No" again. Jim saw him last l ooking over the fence at the show."
