Chris Keynes from the Isle of Wight sent a copy of a newspaper report i n The Bath Chronicle of 6 Sep 1855 reporting the inquest into the death o f Tubal Cain Caine's wife Jane. Tubal was the brother of James and half- brother of Keros and in genealogical parlance was Chris's g-g-granduncle , sometimes written as 2nd great-granduncle, and my [Ed.] great-granduncl e.
A. H. English, Esq, held another inquest, at the Three Blackbirds, Uppe r Bristol Road, on Friday evening, on the body of Jane Caines, who was ta ken out of the river Avon the same morning. The deceased, who was 52 yea rs of age, was the wife of a coachman to a gentleman's family in Green Pa rk, and lived at 28, James Street. She left home shortly after eight i n the morning with the professed object of paying for a parent of boots f or her daughter, and it appeared from the evidence of the latter, who sle pt with her, that during the night she woke her up several times and aske d her to look at the lightning, of which there were no signs. She had be en in a depressed state of mind, in consequence of a report for which the re appears to be no foundation. The unfortunate deceased was found float ing on the water in the Avon, about quarter to nine Friday morning, nea r Green Park, and when taken out she appeared scarcely dead, and some por tion of her clothes was quite dry, so that she had never sunk. There wer e no means at hand, or any taken, for resuscitating her, and the body, af ter some delay, was conveyed to the stable of the house in which the inqu est was held. The jury returned a verdict "that the deceased committed s uicide whilst labouring under temporary insanity".
