grandfather was James Cain Caines (1740-1804). Keros himself was born in 1818.
The "Ag Lab" page shows how difficult it was for
agricultural labourers to survive in the late 18th Century and the first half of
the 19th and the 'inclosures' made it almost impossible. Any means had to be
used to keep the family alive. A poached rabbit or hare may have been the only
meat available to them for weeks on end.
Wiltshire Gaol Calendars, 1728-1820, are available for
research and the following entries refer to Keros's father and grandfather:
Warrant dated 2 Dec 1800, brought before the court on 13
Jan 1801. James Cain Caines and Jacob Cain Caines were committed to Fisherton
Anger Gaol for 3 months; convicted for poaching.
Warrant dated 13 Sep 1808, brought before the court 4 Oct
1808. Jacob Cain Caines was committed to Fisherton Anger Gaol for 3 months;
convicted for poaching. Fisherton Anger is now part of
Salisbury, some 24 kilometres from Berwick St Leonard.
So all of us with a touch of Keros's blood have felonious
ancestors. How would we have coped with living in those depressing times,
when those at the bottom of the ubiquitous British class system had no power and
no means of improving their lot?
