Life-Notes Worked at
Government House Adelaide. His first Colonial Appointment was on the 3rd
of August 1890, he was assigned as a Military Orderly to the serving Governor.
He served in this capacity for 2 Governors of South Australia, The Earl of
Kintore and Sir Thomas Fowell Buxton. George left Government House
Adelaide in Sept 1898, when Sir Fowell Buxton and Lady Buxton returned to
England.
Boer War 1899 - 1902 In
1899 George was assigned as a Military Instructor with the 3rd NSW Imperial
Bushmen, in the South African Boer War. On his enrolment forms he lists
his sister Ann who lived in New York City on 8th Avenue as of his next of kin.
The Imperial Bushmen sailed from Sydney in April 1900 aboard the troop transport
"The Armenian" landing in Durban.
" Strength of
contingent was 30 Officers, 714 NCOS and men, 687 horses (riding), 24 pack
horses, 31 spare horses." under the command of Major
General James A.K. Mackay CB, OBE.
On arriving in Durban they crossed overland to Rhodesia, their Australian
contingent came under the command of the English Brigadier Sir Frederick
Carrington. The 3rd moved to Mafeking in July and then into the Western
Transvaal.
In the next 3 months they rode over 550 miles (885 klms) living in the open and
were under fire several times. In 1900 George was commissioned to Lieutenant,
and re-assigned to the 6th NSW Imperial Bushmen.
George returned to
Australia in Sept 1902 aboard the troopship "Drayton Grange" to
Sydney.
During his service
in the Boer War, George was awarded the Kings and Queens South African Campaign
Medals and also 4 bars for Transvaal, Orange Free State, Cape Colony and
Rhodesia. These medals were presented to the returned servicemen by the
Duke of York at Government House Sydney in Sept 1902.
After the Boer War 1902
On
his return to Adelaide in Oct 1902, George as appointed as a warder and
later Keeper to the Prisons and Gaols Department. His first posting was to Port
Wallaroo Gaol in 1903 he remained there until 1910. His
next posting was to Gladstone Gaol in June 1910 as a Senior Warder, which at the
time was used for 'inebriates, debtors and other prisoners'.
Then in 1912 George was posted to Port Augusta Gaol in the position of
"Keeper of the Gaol". In November of 1924 his wife Alice Mary died of
a heart attack, she is buried in the general cemetery in Port Augusta. George
continued to serve as "Keeper of the Gaol" until 1930 when he retired.
1930 - 1938 After his retirement George lived with both of his children for a few years, and then spent the last few years of his life at The War Veterans Home at Myrtle Bank in Adelaide. He died on the 3rd of May 1938.

LifeNotes: Milfred was
just a few days old when her family moved to Port Wallaroo, when she was 7 they
moved to Gladstone. She attended the Gladstone Primary School until 1912,
when they moved again to Port Augusta. Milfred attended Stirling North
primary School and then the Port Augusta High School. On completion of her
education she applied to the Port Augusta Hospital, and trained as a Nursing
Sister she qualified on 29th Jan 1925 aged 21 and was a registered nursing
sister from 4th February 1925. In April 1927 she was 2nd in command at the
Crystal Brook District Hospital for 6 months.

Husband: Henry Milton ROBINSON - mainly known as Rob or Robbi
On completion of his high school education he worked as a Jackaroo on a station up north, then as a Telegraph operator. In October 1926 he joined the South Australian Police Department and he served 1 year as a Probationary Mounted Constable in Adelaide, then in June 1928 transferred to Streaky Bay Mounted Division, 10 days later he was transferred to Port Lincoln Mounted Patrols. In December 1931 he was transferred back to Adelaide Mounted Division.
In 1933 Henry was presented with a medal from the Royal Humane Society for his part in stopping a bolting horse the ceremony took place at Government House Adelaide. He resigned from the Police Force in October 1936.
He then worked as a door to door salesman selling electric razors.
WW2 - On the 3rd of September 1939 Henry was one to the first 50 to sign on, his enlistment no SX49 . In November 1939 he was posted to 2nd 10th Battalion AIF. In 1940 was a Specialist Signaller. He was appointed Lance Corporal in June 1940 & promoted to Acting Corporal in September 1940. The to Corporal in January 1941, & Acting Staff Sargent in February 1941 - rank confirmed March 1941.
Served in Palestine, was transferred back to Australia through several field hospitals with Malaria & discharged from the army in December 1943.
After WW2 - After being discharged Henry worked for Woolworth's as a Manager, then a Gas Meter Collector for the SA Gas Company. For about 6 months he managed the Carlton Hotel in Sturt Street Adelaide.
He returned to door to door sales - selling shoes & slippers and later adding women's dresses & aprons thus began his own drapery round. Henry would travel up to the Barossa and sell to the outlying farms. later Henry added a run to the Yorke Peninsula and bought an old school bus and converted it into a mobile drapery store.
In 1948 he and Louise moved into a house in Stansbury Henry continued to run his drapery business from Stansbury - travelling to Paskerville, Minalton, Yorketown, Warooka, Price and Stanhouse Bay. Eventually settling in Stansbury Henry gave up his drapery round Henry and settled down to become a T & G Insurance salesman.

On leaving college she trained as a Lutheran School teacher she taught at Robertstown Primary School, Westbourne Primary School, Moonta Mines Primary School, Eudunda Primary School, Port Adelaide Infant School, Rose Park Infant School.
After her marriage Louise gave up teaching and for a short time Louise & Rob (Henry) managed the Carlton Hotel in Sturt St Adelaide, then were street salesmen selling shoes, clothes, material.
Later they bought a van and sold items to outlying farms, and then they moved to Stansbury and had a drapery round. Many years later Louise was Director of the Kurralta Park Kindergarten until she retired.
