A
Pictorial History of Surfing in South Australia

In 1962,
an Australian Surf Life Saving Carnival was held at Moana beach, and there were
thousands of guys from all the other states who witnessed some pitiful surfing
conditions.
So I'm afraid when they went back home to their local clubs they spread the
word that there was no surf in South Australia. Strangely enough as a result
of that, the standard of surfing in this state suffered for quite a few years,
as the locals here were isolated from the evolution of the sport. So back in
the early days when I went out at Bells, Crescents, Byron or wherever, the locals
would look at our number plates and call us "another bunch of South Aussie
eggs".
It wasn't until we got in the water and showed them what we were made of that
we earned their respect.
