Meet two of the Clare Valley's most dynamic and innovative young winemakers. Jeff Grosset started his small winery in the old Auburn Butter factory in 1981 and his reputation as a winemaker of great finesse has grown with each succeeding vintage. In 1998, he was voted the inaugural Winemaker of The Year for Australian Gourmet Traveller and then topped off the year by being elected Riesling Winemaker of The Year at the second World Riesling Summit in Germany. His wines are simply superb! Stephanie Toole purchased Mount Horrocks Wines five years ago from the Ackland Brothers. In 1998 she restored the old railway station at Auburn to create a very special cellar door and luncheon room. Jeff acts as her winemaking consultant, but the Mount Horrocks label is uniquely her own. Stephanie produces an extensive range of her own wines, the Cordon Cut desert wine is legendary; and for the past two vintages she has released a superb Shiraz. In fact neither of the pair knows how to make a bad wine.
4th -6th August (Friday - Sunday)
Jane and Andrew Mitchell need no introduction to lovers of Clare Valley Wines. Since their first vintage twenty five years ago they have continued to make superb and long lasting wines. Andrew makes wine that are brilliantly balanced, have great fruit characteristics, and that will age to perfection. Their Cabernet Sauvignon, Pepper Tree Shiraz and companion Sparkling Pepper Tree are rich and intense wines. The Grower's range of Grenache and Semillon are fresh, lively, "drink me now" wines, that are suited to casual dining. The Watervale Riesling is what he Clare Valley is all about - truly great Rieslings! Jane was instrumental in developing and starting the Clare Valley Gourmet Weekend - the first of its type in Australia. She chaired the Clare Valley Winemakers' Association for many years and is a member of the Wine Federation of Australia. This talented couple live, dream and drink wine! The cost: AU$495.00 per person (twin share) Includes 2 nights accommodation, winery tour, dinner both nights and current and older vintage wines with dinner on Saturday night. |
