The West Torrens Historical
Society and the City of West Torrens have published a 48-page
illustrated book on the old and new suburb names of our Council area.
Since 1853 there have been more than 100 suburb names in the district -
many are no longer used. Have you heard of Weeroopa, Twickenham, Meldreth
Park, Horncastle, Grey, Leackly, Marshfield or Ellenville? Much research has been
done into the derivation and exact localities of these former suburbs
along with those that we know today. This book is available for $5 (postage extra) from the West Torrens Historical
Society Inc, PO Box 43 Marleston SA 5033 or by telephoning 83569768 or 84433380.
This 88-page book of photographs of a great
many aspects of the history of West Torrens is available from the West
Torrens Historical Society for $10 (postage extra). Compiled in 1980 by
Mrs D.M. Marles, OAM, this book is invaluable to students and researchers
of local history. With 185 photographs and maps, it covers people, places
and events. As stocks are limited it is suggested that
application be made to the Society at PO Box 43 Marleston SA 5033, or
telephone John Gray (08) 8356 9768 or John Andrewartha (08) 8443 3380 - email

Published by the City of West Torrens in
2004, this 145-page book is generously illustrated and contains a useful chronological
"Summary View of the History of West Torrens".
Written by historian Peter Donovan, it summarises the history of the "reunited community of Thebarton and West Torrens". Peter Donovan's previous
book on West Torrens, Between the City and the Sea (1986), and Pauline Payne's Thebarton Old and New (1996) are now both out of print.
Gateway City is available for $5 (postage extra) from
the West Torrens Historical Society Inc, PO Box 43 Marleston SA
5033.
The West Torrens
